Don't Buy a New Laptop Yet
A slow computer is one of the most frustrating tech problems — and one of the most misdiagnosed. Most people assume slow means old, but the reality is that most slowdowns are fixable. Here are the six most common causes we diagnose at MTW Repair.
1. A Failing or Full Hard Drive (HDD)
If your laptop has a traditional spinning hard drive (HDD) rather than a solid-state drive (SSD), it's almost certainly a factor in your slowness. HDDs are dramatically slower than SSDs, and as they age, they develop bad sectors that make data retrieval even slower.
The fix: Upgrading from an HDD to an SSD is the single most impactful upgrade for most laptops. We can clone your existing data to a new SSD — you won't lose anything. Expect boot times to go from 2 minutes to under 10 seconds.
2. Insufficient RAM
If you're running multiple browser tabs, a video call, and some apps simultaneously, 4GB of RAM is not enough in 2025. When RAM fills up, your system starts using the much slower hard drive as overflow memory (called a pagefile), which tanks performance.
The fix: RAM upgrade. Many laptops allow RAM upgrades — we can check yours and source compatible modules.
3. Malware or Unwanted Programs
Background processes from malware, adware, or bloatware can silently consume CPU and RAM. If your laptop fans are always running at full speed but you're not doing anything intensive, something is eating your resources.
The fix: Full malware scan, removal of suspicious programs, and cleanup of startup items.
4. Thermal Throttling (Overheating)
When a laptop overheats, the processor intentionally slows itself down to prevent damage — this is called thermal throttling. Dust-clogged vents and dried thermal paste are the usual culprits, and they're extremely common in laptops over 3–4 years old.
The fix: Internal cleaning and thermal paste replacement. Many customers see significant speed improvements from this service alone.
5. Too Many Startup Programs
Every app that launches at startup steals boot time and background memory. After years of installing software, it's common for laptops to have 20+ programs running at startup.
The fix: Audit and trim your startup programs. On Windows: Task Manager → Startup tab. On Mac: System Settings → General → Login Items.
6. An Outdated or Corrupted OS
Operating system issues, corrupted system files, or a fragmented file system (on HDDs) can cause significant slowdowns. Sometimes a clean Windows or macOS reinstall — with your data preserved — is the right call.
The fix: OS refresh or clean install with data backup first.
