Gaming Consoles Are Built to Last — Until They're Not
Modern gaming consoles like the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch are sophisticated machines. But heavy use, dust accumulation, and simple wear mean even the best hardware eventually needs attention.
Here are the most common issues we see at MTW Repair — and how we fix them.
1. HDMI Port Failure (PS5 & Xbox)
HDMI port damage is probably the #1 repair we do for consoles. The port can get bent pins from cables being yanked out at an angle, or the port itself can become loose from the motherboard. Symptoms: no signal on your TV, intermittent connection, or the port is visibly bent.
Our fix: We desolder the damaged port and replace it with a new one. This requires precision micro-soldering equipment — not a DIY job — but we do it every week.
2. Overheating and Shutdowns
If your console shuts itself off during gameplay, it's almost always a thermal issue. Dust-clogged fans, dried-out thermal paste, or a failing fan are the culprits. The PlayStation 5 in particular has a large heatsink that can accumulate significant dust over time.
Our fix: Full internal cleaning, new thermal paste application, and fan replacement if needed. Your console will run cooler and quieter after this service.
3. Nintendo Switch Screen Cracks
The Switch is a portable console, which means it gets dropped. Cracked LCD screens and shattered touch panels are extremely common. We also see issues with the Switch not registering touch input properly after drops.
Our fix: Screen replacement with OEM-quality panels. Most Switch screen repairs are completed same day.
4. Disc Drive Failures (PS5 / Xbox Disc Edition)
If your console won't read discs, grinds when you insert them, or rejects discs entirely, the disc drive mechanism has likely failed. On PS5, the drive is also paired to the motherboard, which requires us to use specialized tools to complete the pairing process.
Our fix: Drive mechanism replacement with proper console pairing.
5. Joy-Con Drift (Nintendo Switch)
The infamous Joy-Con drift — where your character moves on screen without you touching the stick — is caused by worn-out analog stick components. Nintendo's fix is a free repair program, but wait times can be months. We can fix it in days.
Our fix: Joy-Con analog stick replacement. Same-day service available.
